As the number of Omicron cases in the national capital continues to climb, the Delhi administration today prohibited all Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations. According to a Delhi Disaster Management Authority order, all cultural activities and other gatherings are forbidden (DDMA).
Authorities from the district administration and the Delhi police have been told to obey commands, and district officials have been required to provide daily reports. Market trade groups have also been instructed to refuse admission to consumers who do not wear masks.
So far, Delhi has documented 57 Omicron instances, the most of any state or union territory in India. In India, 213 instances of the highly infectious strain of Covid-19 have been identified.
In response to indicators of an increase in infections from the new strain, the Centre has ordered states to establish “war rooms” and reinstate controls, including night curfews, in an advice. It also specified a number of preventative and containment methods, such as comprehensive testing and collection regulation.
The health ministry’s letter asked for “more foresight, data analysis, dynamic decision making, and stringent and fast containment action,” and ordered states/union territories to be “rapid and focused, taking containment measures and limits even before these levels are achieved.”
Today, India’s Coronavirus total reached 3,47,58,481 (as per the data from Government’s Cowin Application) after the government reported 6,317 new infections, an increase of 18% from the previous day’s 5,326 cases. The number of active cases has dropped to 78,190, the lowest level in 575 days.
With 318 fatalities in the last 24 hours, the overall number of deaths in the pandemic has risen to 4.78 lakhs.
According to the World Health Organization, the Omicron form is spreading quicker than the Delta variant and is infecting people who have already been vaccinated or who have recovered from Covid.
