What is District ?

It is to isolate a certain part or region of a State, City, or Town by outlining a region. That region is called a district.


What is the meaning of zilla ?

A district or zilla in (Hindi) is an isolated-administrative division of an Indian state or territory. In most cases, The districts are further subdivided into subdivisions and or directly into minor regions and called tehsils or talukas. As of 2021, there are a total of 748 districts from the 640 in the Census of India (2011) and then recorded 593 in the Census of India(2001).


The Difference between City and District.

  • City is a large and Permanent where as a District is an administrative division managed by local Government.
  • City has their own law enforcement, fire department sanitation services,etc and the district administers them. Hence, they abide by them.

In 2001, the number  of the districts in India was 593 districts and it increased by 47 districts totalling to 640 districts by 2011. Furthermore, the number of districts increased to 739 with a growth of 93 districts added to it.

Largest DIstrict of India

Central Delhi has the density of 25,759 inhabitants per Kilometers  with an area of 25 square Kilometers ( 9.7 sq mi). It consists of  Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi), which also served as the capital for the Mughal Empire, and is home to many  marvelous monuments like the Delhi Fort and the Jama Masjid, Delhi’s principal mosque.

Smallest District

Lower Dibang Valley District has the density of 14 inhabitants per square kilometer ( 36/sq meter making it the least populous district in the Country.


District Officials

  • District Magistrate or Deputy Commissioner or District Collector, is the officer incharge of administration and revenue collection.
  • Superintendent of Police or Senior Superintendent of Police or Deputy Commissioner of Police, an officer belonging to the Indian Police Service is responsible for maintaining law and order in the districts.
  • Deputy Conservator of Forests, an officer belonging to the Indian Forest Service,is the one incharge of the management of the forests, environment and wildlife of the district

These officials are assisted by officers from the appropriate branch of the state government.
